Junior Parents and Students:

National Principal's Month
Each October, National Principals Month recognizes the essential role that principals play in making a school great.
Principals are among the hardest working, yet often least-recognized individuals in education. Principals set the academic tone for their schools, and it is their vision, dedication, and determination that provide the mobilizing force for achieving student success. In October, we seek to honor these unsung heroes for their tireless efforts in pursuit of excellence in education.
National Principals Month is a widely recognized celebration of the principalship, marked by national and state resolutions supporting the event, as well as acknowledgements from U.S. Senators and Representatives, and top government officials. However, the most important National Principals Month celebrations are the ones that take place in schools and communities across the country.
In Lyons, we are privileged to have some wonderful people serving in the position of building principal--Derek Carlson (LHS), BJ Smith (LMS), Terri Glass (Central), and Kristin Borrowman (Park) as well as LHS assistant principal and AD, Jeff Fuss. The next time you see them, tell them thanks for their dedication to our students, teams, organizations, staff, schools, and community!

Saturday ended up being a pretty good day to run, and run we did! I thought that we ran really well today but ended up just a little short of qualifying for State this year. We were up against some fantastic competition at our Regionals. The top 10 are guaranteed to go to State, but there are often several others that qualify based on how many of the top 10 are on a qualifying team. The girls side qualified out to 11th, and the boys to 12th. Jojo Vargas ran a super hard race in 21:42 (a 38 second all-time PR), and ended up in 12th place - just barely outside of qualifying this year. Cain Villasenor also ran an excellent race, finishing 15th - only 3 places from a qualifying spot this year. Looking at data from other regionals, a different assigned location may have resulted in qualifying finishes - it's kind of a quirk of the way KSHSAA runs postseason XC. The other notable finish from today's race is Ricardo Tapia's 36 second PR, which moved him into our team's top 5. Full results from the ladies (out of 51 runners): Jojo - 12th, Alli - 25th, Marianna - 35th, Fernanda - 48th, Dayana, 49th, and Lee - 51st. And from the men (out of 78 runners): Cain: 15th, Paco - 21st, Ant - 31st, Gilberto - 42nd, Ricardo - 44th, Juan - 45th, and Edgard - 62nd.
16 teams were assigned to run at the Great Bend location. The ladies placed 6th (only 3 points from 5th) as a team and the men were 5th (only 9 points from 4th)! These athletes have worked so hard this year, and I couldn't be prouder of their performance both today and over the course of the season. Though the season is done, I'm already looking forward to next year! With no seniors to graduate, I'm excited to get the same group (+ 8th graders moving up, new recruits, and maybe some returning runners) again next year. I truly believe we have a team state appearance in our future the next couple of years!
Thank you for all your encouragement through the season. Until next year...
