The Lyons Rotary Club met with Central Elementary School’s Student Ambassadors last week to present a check from the club for $1,300 to purchase new headphones for use with their student computers.
The Lyons Rotary Club matched a $650 grant from the District Rotary Foundation to provide the gift. The Lyons Rotary Club conducts several fund-raising activities each year including nut sales, raffles, and benefit dinners. The proceeds are used to donations to local community service organizations as well as for providing 4 concurrent $2,000 scholarships to Lyons High School graduates.
Rotary is the world’s oldest and largest community service organization. It started in Chicago in 1905 and has grown to over 1.4 million members in over 35,000 Rotary clubs in more than 220 countries and geographical areas.
Central Elementary’s Student Ambassadors are fifth grade students who are selected through an application and interview process to serve in a variety of special occasions including meeting with public groups, introducing guests, teaming up with new students to make them feel welcome, and mentoring younger students.
Students at Central will use their new headphones to listen to audio files and instructions for assessment purposes.
